Ledgerline
Construction fintech · Leeds, United Kingdom · 2024
Product design and brand for a construction-finance platform that moves payment claims between contractors, quantity surveyors, and lenders.
Construction payment is a chain of claims, certificates, and retentions that routinely breaks the small subcontractors at the end of it. Ledgerline's founders — a quantity surveyor and a payments engineer — had working software and a real problem to solve, but the product spoke lender language to people in site cabins. Trials stalled at onboarding: contractors didn't trust a tool they couldn't read.
We rebuilt the product's information architecture around the document every contractor already understands: the payment application. Every screen answers one of three questions — what am I owed, what is certified, what is late — in that order. The interface borrows its vocabulary from paper: ledger rules, stamped statuses, tabular figures set in a monospaced grid that survives a cracked phone screen in direct sunlight.
The brand followed the product. A wordmark built from stacked rules, a two-colour system, and copy guidelines with one instruction that mattered more than the rest: write like a site manager, not like a bank.
Onboarding completion rose immediately after the redesigned claim flow shipped, and support tickets about 'where is my money' — the founders' informal north-star metric — fell by half. Ledgerline closed its Series A eight months later, with the product demo doing most of the talking.
“Every design agency we spoke to wanted to make fintech look friendly. Foundry North made it look certain, which is what people who are owed money actually want.”
