Brand identity and digital presence for a fourth-generation Norwegian workboat builder competing for international tenders.
Halvard Marine has built pilot boats and harbour tugs on the same fjord since 1948. Their vessels are specified to survive the Norwegian Sea; their brand was a fax-era logotype and a website that hadn't been touched since 2011. When the yard began bidding for Scottish and Canadian coastguard tenders, procurement panels were comparing a century of shipbuilding competence against competitors who simply looked more capable on screen.
The brief was blunt: make the brand as credible as the boats, without making a shipyard look like a startup.
We spent a week at the yard before designing anything — in the welding halls, on sea trials, inside the tender documents that actually win contracts. The identity is drawn from what we found there: hull identification plates, classification stencils, and the flat honesty of engineering drawings. A heavy condensed wordmark sits on a drawing-frame grid, with a specification-first layout system that treats a vessel datasheet with the same care most brands reserve for a campaign page.
The website was rebuilt around the fleet register. Every vessel class gets a full specification page — dimensions, propulsion, class notation, sea-state ratings — structured so a procurement officer can cite it directly in an evaluation. Norwegian and English run in parallel throughout.
The new identity launched alongside the yard's bid for a five-vessel pilot boat contract. Halvard made the shortlist for the first time, and the evaluation feedback specifically noted the clarity of the technical documentation. Enquiries from outside Scandinavia — historically a handful per year — became a steady monthly occurrence.
“They understood that our customers are engineers before they are audiences. The site reads like one of our vessels: nothing decorative, everything load-bearing.”
